How did we get here? What are the events that led to the October 1st referendum and the current political climate in Catalonia?

I was working on a timeline in order to describe the series of events that took us to where we are now, but the guys at CataloniaVotes already have a very comprehensive document (in four languages!) describing them, so there is no reason for me to duplicate their work.
